At Bromley Eye Centre, we fit ortho-k contact lenses for people who want comfortable vision and glasses free vision through the day. Also known as ortho-k, ortho-k contact, k contact lenses or k contact, this treatment uses specially designed contact lenses that are worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea overnight. When the lenses are worn overnight, they help correct how the cornea bends light onto the retina; in myopic eyes, the cornea is too steep, so light focuses in front of the retina and distant vision becomes blurred. While you sleep at night, the lenses gently reshape the central cornea with subtle pressure, correcting refractive errors such as myopia and astigmatism.
Ortho-k lenses are rigid lenses, often described as rigid gas-permeable, and are made from this material to allow oxygen to reach the eye overnight while matching the shape of your cornea. That means the fitting is very different from buying regular contact lenses. We assess whether the lenses work effectively for your prescription, eye health and daily routine before recommending a plan. For the right patient, ortho-k work can be an excellent alternative to glasses or contact lenses during the day, and because the cornea gradually returns to its original shape without wear, it is also a reversible, non-surgical alternative to laser eye surgery.
People often look into vision correction therapy because they want natural vision, sharp daytime vision and more freedom from wearing ortho-k lenses or other daytime contacts. Ortho-k can also support myopia control for suitable patients, including younger wearers whose vision needs may change over time. We will always be honest about whether the approach is likely to help your specific eye conditions and whether your higher prescriptions or lifestyle make you a good candidate.
