Are Expensive Glasses Really Worth It?

News

Frequent glasses wearers will know that smudges are a daily occurrence that can marr the quality of your vision and cause frustration. There are various reasons why you may be experiencing smudges, and various things you can do to deal with these. At The Bromley Eye Centre, we’re well accustomed to the daily issues glasses-wearers face, so read on for our tips on keeping your glasses smudge-free.

Tips for Keeping Your Glasses Smudge Free

A lot of glasses wearers will be tempted to reach for the bottom of their shirts or a tissue to clean their lenses, but microfibre or lens cloths are usually recommended for wiping away smudges as they minimise the risk of scratches occurring. Alternatively, single-use alcohol wipes are great for keeping in your bag or pocket whilst on the go (although they aren’t the best for the environment). It also helps to rinse your glasses under some water to remove any dust and debris that could potentially scrape the lenses as you wipe them down.

There are, of course, certain reasons why some people may experience more smudges than others. Makeup-wearers often struggle with products transferring, and the same can happen with oily skincare products too. Although it is extremely difficult to prevent them entirely, you can minimise these kinds of smudges by using a powder to set makeup in place or letting your skincare sink in before putting your glasses back on.

The skin also carries natural oils and can contribute to smudging. To avoid this, we would recommend handling your glasses by their frames instead of picking them up by the lenses. If for some reason this is unavoidable, you can always wash the hands first to get rid of excess oils. It is also possible in some cases to recieve an anti-smudge or ‘oleophobic’ coating on your lenses, but this will be an added cost.

Not all glasses wearers will need to have their glasses on their face throughout the day. If you carry your frames around with you in a bag or pocket, it’s also worth keeping them in a case to prevent smudges or scratches on the lenses.
